The Queen Of Cowrie Strikes Again!! Comes Through For Miss Cote D'Ivoire, Olivia Yace

The Queen of Cowrie, Dion is a Nigerian designer, and her brand La Falaise Dion is inspired by African spirituality and mystical practices.

According to Dion “ the cowrie has a special significance in the African culture and has been seen by our ancestors to be an object of divination, a communication link between men and spirits, also the cowrie represents wealth, power, protection, the woman, creation, feminity, and also sexuality.” And as a matter of fact, has been used in the past as a form of old currency in West Africa.

Dion’s brand is the designer’s way to not only honour her ancestors’ history but to write her own. According to her, “it is time for us black Africans to reconcile with our heritage and reclaim our culture; our spirituality, our gods and embrace it.

Known to have designed the cowrie shell headpiece (Lagbadja) worn by Beyonce in her “spirit” music video for the Lion King: The Gift, Dion strikes again but this time it’s an Haute-couture piece covered in cowries for Miss Cote D’Ivoire Olivia Yace.

Handmade by a team of 12, the lovely piece tells the story of the Akan woman from the Ivory Coast. She represents the beauty, feminity, and bravery embodied by women of this ethnic group. Handmade and carefully crafted with Akan woven loincloth, celebrates the woman as a child-bearer and a life-giver.

The cowrie shells that make up the centrepiece of the headdress were gotten from the ocean and symbolize creation, life, and protection while the headdress represents a calabash full of water that the Akan woman carries on her head. It is a source of life and it symbolizes hard work.

So fellas on a scale of 1 to 10 how likely are you to rock this number?

Don't keep this to yourself, share! 😉
